Wolf Park

Nearly every day I learn something with my boys or from my boys.  This week the most interesting thing I learned is that buffalo never, in fact, roamed in North America. Ever.

That's right - the song is wrong.

But it's in your head now, isn't it?

Not a Wolf. Or a Buffalo.

Bison however, come in two versions - American and European. As their names suggest, that's where they live. Likewise, there are two types of Buffalo - Water (found in South Asia) and Cape (found in Africa). Since this is not a Wikipedia page, I'll let you do your own further research into the matter, but let's just say that the song is wrong, we've all been lied to and it's generally blamed on confused explorers.

And yes, this was information we learned while visiting Wolf Park.  Which does have wolves too! Also bison, coyotes and red and grey foxes.

We had signed up for the 45 minute Follow the Pack Tour and had an informative stroll around the park,
learning about the animals as well as the research and conservation efforts the park provides.  I was proud of
the six year-old for knowing exactly what our guide meant when talking about "herbivores," "carnivores,"
and "omnivores."  I appreciate confirmation every now and then that something we've learned about has stuck.

It was a beautiful, crisp fall day, that felt perfect in the sunshine.

But I really, really, really, like fall weather.

The park also has a Howl Night on the weekend that I've heard is worth attending. Maybe if we find ourselves up in the area again in the evening, we'll try and catch that too.  This time around we enjoyed the walk around the park as well as spending time with Nana and Papa.  We even convinced College Boy to take a break and join us - he's been working hard and needed some time away from Calculus.

Fortunately, we did not encounter any Calculus during our field trip.

I think the day away from home was good for all of us - as well as time spent with family.  After Wolf Park we enjoyed a meal at a new restaurant then had an early birthday celebration for the October boys.

As I mentioned in my previous post, we are spreading Week 5 of our curriculum over two weeks since there was a lot packed into the timeline. So I will have more on that next week.
